"Agentic commerce" is a clumsy phrase for a simple idea: software that does part of the shopping, not just the searching. A shopper describes what they need, and an assistant finds options, compares them and, increasingly, helps complete the purchase.
For a merchant there are two different things going on, and they are worth keeping apart.
1. An agent on your own store
This is the shopper-facing assistant that lives on your storefront. It reads your real catalogue, answers "which one should I get" in plain language, compares options against what the shopper said they need, and can add the right item to the cart.
Realistic benefits:
- Easier buying on hard-to-browse catalogues. If your products are technical, varied or confusing, a conversation beats a filter sidebar.
- Fewer repetitive support questions. Sizing, compatibility and "does this work with" questions get answered instantly from your data.
- Bigger baskets. A helpful suggestion alongside the right product is cross-selling that feels like service.
- No re-platforming. It works on your existing catalogue.

2. An agent for the merchant
The other half is a merchant agent for you, the owner: answering questions about sales, inventory and orders in plain language, and surfacing what needs attention. It saves the time you would otherwise spend digging through reports.
3. Being found by outside assistants
The third piece is external. General-purpose AI assistants may recommend products from stores. Whether yours appears depends on data quality, eligibility and each provider's own rules, none of which any vendor controls. Our preparation checklist covers what you can do.
What to be sceptical about
- Promised conversion lifts. Results depend on your catalogue, traffic and prices. We make no guaranteed outcome claim, and our Terms say AI output can be inaccurate and should be reviewed.
- "List me in ChatGPT" services. Listing is decided by the provider, not by a plugin.
- Autonomous changes. Review any agent-suggested price or inventory change before applying it.
The cost model matters
You bring your own model API key from Anthropic or OpenAI and pay that provider directly for usage. Our add-on is a one-time setup fee, with no per-conversation markup. That keeps the economics transparent.
Should you do it now?
If your catalogue is large, technical or confusing, or your support inbox is full of product questions, an on-store agent is worth testing. If you sell ten simple products, spend your effort on photos and copy first.
