Selling digital products looks easy: there is nothing to ship. In practice it raises questions physical stores never face. Where do the files live? How do buyers get them? What happens when someone loses their download link a year later?
The four things a digital store needs
1. Proper file storage
Files should not sit in your website's public folder where anyone can guess a URL. They belong in cloud object storage wired into the store, which also scales when your catalogue or downloads grow.
2. Secure delivery
Buyers should receive signed, expiring download links. Links can be revoked, and files are not publicly guessable. This protects the product you worked hard to make.
3. License keys
For software and licensed assets, the store should generate and deliver a key per order automatically, with no manual emailing.
4. A customer library
This is the one most stores forget. A "My library" area where buyers sign in and re-download everything they have bought, with their keys in one place, removes a huge share of "I lost my file" support emails.
Why it is often a plugin tangle
On general-purpose platforms, each of these is typically a separate plugin or app, from separate vendors. They are workable, but each is another thing to keep updated and another place for something to fail. If you are living this on WordPress, we wrote about the maintenance load.
Our Pro package ships the Digital-products theme with all four built in, with a live demo you can inspect, including a real customer library.
Pricing and positioning tips
- Sell outcomes, not files. Show what the buyer can do with it.
- Include a preview, such as screenshots, a sample or a short demo.
- Be explicit about the licence: personal, commercial, team.
- Offer bundles. Digital products have no shipping cost, so bundling is cheap to offer.
Piracy: a realistic view
You cannot make a digital file uncopyable. You can make casual sharing inconvenient: expiring links, per-order keys, and download limits. Beyond that, a good product with fair pricing and easy access is the best defence.
Taxes and compliance
Digital goods can carry different tax rules depending on where the buyer lives. Check the rules for your markets, or ask your accountant. Our Terms note that you remain responsible for the licences and permissions your industry requires.
A marketplace for creators
If you want other creators to sell on your platform and you take a commission, that is a marketplace rather than a single digital store. The Pro package also covers that build, with vendor accounts, commissions and payouts.
