Shopify earned its reputation. It is easy to launch, it is reliable, and the admin is a pleasure to use. We are not here to pretend otherwise. But there is a point in a store's life where the rental model stops making sense, and that is when merchants start asking us about moving.
The costs that compound
The headline plan price is rarely the real number. Over time, a Shopify store typically accumulates:
- A monthly plan, forever, whether you sell or not.
- App subscriptions. Reviews, filters, subscriptions, B2B pricing, bundles and back-in-stock alerts are often paid apps, each billed monthly.
- Transaction fees. Depending on your setup and payment provider, there can be fees on top of the card processing you already pay.
- Theme and developer costs for anything the template does not do.
None of these is outrageous alone. Together they turn a low-looking monthly start into a significant line item, and the bill grows with success rather than shrinking.
You are renting, not owning
On Shopify you do not own the platform. You cannot move the code, run it elsewhere or change how checkout works at a deep level. If a feature you need is outside what the platform allows, you work around it with apps or you go without. And if you leave, the store you built is not something you can take with you.
With a StoreAdept store the code is yours. You can extend it, move it, or hire anyone to work on it. We explain why that matters in what self-hosting actually gives you.
Where the platform limits bite
- B2B and wholesale. Trade accounts, customer-group pricing and quote requests are possible on hosted platforms but often depend on higher plans or extra apps. Our Growth package builds them in. See the B2B article for detail.
- Digital goods. Secure downloads, license keys and a re-download library usually mean another app. The Pro package includes them. See selling digital products.
- Customisation. Anything beyond the theme editor means a developer working inside someone else's constraints.
What you get by moving
- No monthly platform fee and no revenue share.
- The features above included, not rented per app.
- A store built and launched for you, in 7 to 10 days, with training.
- Full code access.
When Shopify is still the right answer
Be honest with yourself about this one. If you want zero technical involvement, you have no interest in hosting or a care plan, and the platform's limits do not touch your business, Shopify may genuinely be the right fit. Our Care plan exists for owners who want hosting and upkeep handled, but it is a different model from Shopify's all-in-one hosted service.
If your app bill is climbing, your needs are outgrowing the template, or you simply want to own what you built, it is worth a conversation. Seeing the demos is the quickest way to judge: browse all 12 live stores.
