WooCommerce is a great way to start. The plugin is free, WordPress is familiar, and there is a theme for everything. The merchants who come to us are rarely unhappy with that first year. They are tired of what the store turns into by year three.
The "free" platform has a maintenance bill
WooCommerce is not one product. It is WordPress, a theme, a page builder, and a stack of plugins from different authors for payments, shipping, subscriptions, filters, SEO, caching and security. Every one of those updates on its own schedule, and every update can break another.
The costs we hear about most often:
- Update anxiety. Nobody wants to click "update all" on a live store the week before a sale.
- Plugin overlap. Two plugins fighting over the same checkout hook, with each vendor pointing at the other.
- Speed that drifts. A store that was quick at launch slowly gets heavier as plugins and tracking scripts pile up.
- Security surface. WordPress is the most targeted CMS on the web, simply because it is the most common. A forgotten plugin is the usual way in.
None of this is a flaw in WooCommerce. It is the price of a flexible, open ecosystem that someone has to look after.
What merchants want instead
When we ask what they are after, the answer is almost always the same: a store that just works, that I fully control, without a monthly platform tax. That rules out most hosted platforms, and it rules out carrying on with the maintenance.
A StoreAdept store is built on Laravel with a mature ecommerce core, with the features you would otherwise assemble from plugins already part of the platform. You get a Shopify-style admin for orders, products, customers and discounts, and you get full code access. You can read more about that approach in what it means to own your platform.
What changes when you move
- One coherent system instead of a plugin stack, so there is no cross-vendor blame game.
- Catalogue structure that fits your industry. The Standard package comes with 12 industry storefronts built around real category and attribute structures, not a generic template.
- No platform fee. You pay once. Hosting and your domain are the only ongoing costs, or you can have us run it on StoreAdept Care.
- Someone else does the work. We install, brand and configure the store, and set up your products. Catalogue and customer import from your existing store is scoped in your brief, and we tell you before you pay if it needs a quote.
When you should stay on WooCommerce
We would rather be useful than pushy. Stay if:
- You have a developer or agency you trust who keeps the store healthy and the bill is reasonable.
- You depend on a specific WooCommerce extension that has no equivalent elsewhere.
- Your store is small, simple, and not causing you any trouble.
If you are spending more time managing the store than selling from it, that is the signal.
What a move looks like
You buy the package, send us your brief and brand assets, and we build the new store in a private preview while your old one keeps trading. You review, we refine, and then we switch the domain. A typical build goes live in 7 to 10 days. Keep your old store untouched until you are happy.
